Repayment is impossible, so what is to be our response to the gospel? We are made to be dumbstruck by the glory of grace. The gospel removes our burden, and those who simply replace one burden with the burden of repayment are missing the point. Ephesians 1 says we are saved "to the praise of His glorious grace. So, live according the the plan for you - to be amazed, be stunned, be thunderstruck, at the radiance of the glory of God! It is displayed supremely in the cross of Christ.
